Love the Body You’re Learning

           Not for how it looks.

           For what it can do.

For how it carries you forward.

Maybe your body feels different than it used to.

Our bodies are never exactly the same throughout our lives.

              They shift with

             hormonal changes

like pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and perimenopause.

              They respond to

             injury, surgery, and rehabilitation

            .

              They reflect

stress, grief, illness, and major life transitions

            .

              They move through seasons of

            strength, fatigue, healing, and growth.

And every time the body changes, one thing becomes true again:

             We have to learn it—again.

Because the way we moved last year may not serve the body we have today.

             ---

The lifelong process of relearning your body

            Movement isn’t static.

            Strength isn’t permanent.

            Ease isn’t guaranteed.

But the human body is remarkably adaptable.

              Research on

             neuroplasticity

            and

             motor learning

shows the brain and body can keep improving coordination, stability, and control throughout life—even after injury or long periods of inactivity.

In simple terms: your body can improve at any age.

Change in the body isn’t the end of capability.

Often, it’s the beginning of a new understanding.

             ---

Why Pilates meets the body in every season

Pilates supports the body through change because it is:

                Moderate in intensity

, appropriate from postpartum recovery to post-rehabilitation after injury or surgery

                Precision-based

, rebuilding coordination, joint stability, and muscular balance without excess strain

                Progressive

, allowing movement to evolve with the body instead of demanding the body stay the same

Research shows Pilates can improve low back pain, balance, core strength, and functional movement, along with body awareness and confidence in movement.

So you feel steadier, stronger, and more at home in your body again.

Pilates doesn’t ask your body to return to the past.

It helps you move forward with clarity.

             ---

Loving the body vs. loving the learning

            We often hear:

             love your body

            .

            And self-compassion matters.

But something even more powerful happens when we shift the focus:

Fall in love with learning your body.

            Because learning means:

              Paying attention instead of judging

              Adjusting instead of forcing

              Growing instead of comparing

When you love the learning process, every change becomes useful information—

            not failure.

             ---

              A Valentine’s Day reflection

Your body has carried you through more than anyone else can see.

            Through healing.

            Through stress.

            Through growth.

Through ordinary days that quietly required strength.

            And it is still adapting.

            Still learning.

            Still moving forward.

That’s exactly what we practice inside every class.

So today isn’t just about loving your body for how it looks.

It’s about honoring what it can do

and staying curious about what it’s still learning to become.

Happy Valentine’s Day from The School of Pilates.

            Love the body you’re learning.

Why Pilates Works When Other Workouts Don’t

At some point — often in our late 30s or 40s — the relationship with our bodies begins to change and continues to go through changes as we age.

What once felt effortless now requires more attention. Recovery takes longer. Stiffness shows up more quickly. Workouts that used to energize can suddenly leave us sore, depleted, or struggling to get through the rest of the day.

            This isn’t failure.

            It’s physiology.

And it’s exactly why Pilates becomes not just helpful — but essential.

Strength That Supports You Beyond the Workout

As the body changes, it becomes less tolerant of constant “all-out” effort. High-intensity exercise can still have value, but when it’s relied on too heavily, it often leaves the body running on spiked cortisol and adrenaline.

This shows up as soreness that lingers, weight gain, fatigue that doesn’t fully lift, disrupted sleep, or that familiar feeling of being “wired but tired.”

            Pilates builds strength differently.

Instead of pushing the body to exhaustion, it trains strength through precision, control, and breath. Movements are slower, more intentional, and supported by alignment — which allows muscles to work efficiently without unnecessary strain.

You leave class feeling strong and capable — able to move through the rest of your day without needing to recover from your workout.

This kind of strength supports life, not just fitness goals.

              Why Mobility Becomes Non-Negotiable

Mobility isn’t about being flexible or touching your toes.

It’s about joints being able to move smoothly through their natural range — with support and control.

Pilates trains what we call articulated movement, meaning the body learns to move in connected, coordinated pieces instead of stiff blocks. In practical terms, this looks like:

The spine moving one vertebra at a time instead of locking up

The hips and shoulders doing their job so the low back and neck don’t overwork

The body bending, rotating, and stabilizing without bracing or strain

When joints stop moving well, the body compensates. And those compensations are often what show up as back pain, hip discomfort, neck tension, or that feeling of stiffness when getting up from a chair.

This is why mobility matters more with time — not so you can do more, but so everyday life stays comfortable and fluid.

Why “Getting Older” Isn’t the Real Problem

Many aches we associate with aging aren’t caused by age itself — they’re caused by years of inefficient movement.

We sit more. We repeat the same motions. We brace instead of support. Certain muscles end up doing too much work, while others stop contributing altogether.

            Pilates helps retrain those habits.

Through simple but precise movements, it reveals where the body is compensating and teaches a more balanced way to move. Over time, effort is distributed more evenly, reducing unnecessary strain and helping prevent discomfort from accumulating.

This is why Pilates is so often recommended alongside physical therapy — not because it’s easy, but because it reinforces better movement patterns rather than working around pain.

              Pilates as Literacy, Not Fitness

Most people were never taught how to move their bodies well.

We didn’t learn it in school. Sports taught us how to perform for a specific activity, not how to understand our bodies. Fitness often teaches us how to push harder, not how to move smarter.

            Pilates fills that gap.

It teaches awareness, coordination, and control — the fundamentals of how the body actually works. Over time, movement becomes less about effort and more about clarity. Less about forcing, more about knowing.

            This isn’t a phase.

            It’s education.

And once you learn it, it informs everything else you do.

              The Bottom Line

At this point in life, the goal isn’t punishment.

            It’s longevity.

            Strength that supports you.

            Mobility that keeps you independent.

A body that works with you, not against you.

            Pilates isn’t just appropriate here.

It’s one of the smartest investments you can make.

Why Pilates Is the Smartest New Year’s Resolution

Every January, we’re encouraged to start over.

Bigger goals. Harder workouts. More discipline.

But what if this year, the resolution wasn’t about doing more —

what if it was about choosing

            better

           ?

Pilates isn’t a quick fix or a seasonal challenge. It’s a sustainable, intelligent practice designed to support the body over a lifetime. And that’s exactly why it belongs at the center of your new year.

A Sustainable Practice That Builds Energy — Not Exhaustion

Many fitness resolutions rely on intensity: pushing harder, burning more, leaving the body depleted. While high-intensity exercise has its place, it often comes at a cost — soreness that lingers, energy that crashes, and a nervous system that never quite settles.

           Pilates works differently.

It builds strength through control, precision, and breath. Instead of draining your energy, it supports it. You leave class feeling worked, but also upright, stable, and clear — not wiped out.

That’s why Pilates fits so naturally into real life. It’s a form of movement that strengthens you without taking everything you have, which also makes it an excellent option for evening practice. You build strength and awareness without overstimulating your system.

Sustainability is what makes a resolution last. Pilates is built for that.

            Foundational Strength and Lifelong Mobility

One of the most overlooked truths about movement is simple:

If you don’t move it, you lose it.

Strength alone isn’t enough. The body also needs joints that move well, muscles that adapt, and coordination that carries into daily life.

Pilates focuses on teaching the body how to move — not just how to exercise. Most of us were never taught this. We didn’t learn it in school, and if we played sports, we were taught how to move for that sport — not how to move well in our bodies overall.

At The School of Pilates, we focus on foundational movement patterns: how you bend, rotate, stabilize, and transition. These patterns are what support everything else you do, from workouts to everyday life.

This kind of movement doesn’t age out. It becomes more valuable with time.

The Practice That Makes Everything Else Better

Pilates doesn’t replace the activities you love — it supports them.

Running, pickleball, strength training, cycling, and other repetitive activities place consistent stress on the body. Over time, muscles and connective tissue can lose balance and adaptability, which is often when aches and injuries begin to appear.

Pilates restores what repetition takes away.

By strengthening muscles through their full range and improving coordination across the whole body, Pilates helps you move better everywhere else. It creates strength that’s usable, not just impressive.

A Resolution That Grows With You

The most meaningful resolutions aren’t about a finish line.

They’re about choosing a practice that continues to deepen over time.

Pilates meets you where you are — and then grows with you. What begins as physical practice becomes an understanding of your body that informs how you move, stand, train, and live.

This year, instead of chasing intensity, choose intelligence.

Instead of burning out, build in.

Instead of starting over every January, choose something that compounds.

Make Pilates your resolution — and let it support you well beyond the new year.

The Season of Alignment: Move, Eat, and Reset

The shift into fall is subtle at first—cooler mornings, earlier sunsets, a slower rhythm in our routines. As the outdoors quiet, our bodies instinctively follow suit. We move less, crave warm comfort foods, and drift toward a deeper stillness.

But this is also the season when our systems need movement, nourishment, and restoration the most. It’s not about doing more—it’s about aligning better.

At The School of Pilates, we call this the Season of Alignment—a time to

            Move, Eat, and Reset

with intention so that by spring, you don’t feel like you’re starting over. You feel like you’ve been preparing for what’s next.

            Move: Keep Your Energy Circulating

           What happens when we don’t...

As temperatures drop, our overall activity tends to decline. Studies in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity show that moderate-to-vigorous movement can fall by up to 30% in winter. When this happens, circulation slows, joints stiffen, energy drops, and mood often follows. Mentally, lower movement levels are linked to higher stress, fatigue, and seasonal affective symptoms.

           What happens when we do...

The antidote is consistency. Regular movement—especially mindful, full-body practices like Pilates—keeps circulation strong, supports mood through endorphin release, and boosts immune function. A 2021 review in

as your major movement days. These sessions strengthen, mobilize, and align your body from the inside out. Between those sessions, light walking or gentle stretching keeps you moving and restores balance.

           What happens when we don’t...

As the temperature cools, our digestion naturally slows. Circulation concentrates in the body’s core, and the digestive process becomes less efficient. Colder weather and heavier foods can reduce gut motility and enzyme activity, leading to bloating, fatigue, and a sluggish metabolism. A 2023 review from Continental Hospitals Digestive Health noted that cold conditions are correlated with slower digestive function and increased cravings for starches and sweets.

When we align our eating with the season—favoring nutrient-dense, fiber-rich meals that support warmth and digestion—we stabilize our energy and strengthen the gut, which houses roughly 70% of the immune system. Supporting digestion this way helps sustain immunity, hormonal balance, and mental clarity throughout winter.

Reduced activity, inconsistent nutrition, and seasonal stress can disrupt immune efficiency and hormone rhythms. According to the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, sedentary behavior and inflammation are key contributors to lowered immune response in winter. Over time, this imbalance can manifest as fatigue, mood instability, and disrupted sleep cycles—especially in women balancing work, family, and changing daylight rhythms.

Movement and nutrition work synergistically to protect your system. Research from Frontiers in Immunology and The British Journal of Sports Medicine shows that individuals maintaining consistent, moderate physical activity experience lower inflammation and stronger immune regulation year-round. In other words, staying consistent now protects the foundation you’ll stand on later.

From Intimidated to Intrigued: Starting Pilates with Confidence

         If you’ve ever thought,

“I’m intimidated but also intrigued by Pilates,”

you’re not alone. We hear that all the time—and we understand.

The equipment is likely something you’ve never seen in a gym or used in school. It can look mysterious at first glance, but here’s the truth: every single one of us—teachers and long-time students included—once stood exactly where you are now.

Like anything new, there’s a learning curve. We never expect you to walk in ready to hop on the Reformer with total confidence. Our job is to help you leave feeling more comfortable after every single class.

we see this shift happen every day: students arriving unsure, and leaving a little more confident, class by class.

           1. You’re Safe on the Equipment

Pilates equipment was designed with safety and support in mind.

The design of each piece—Reformer, Tower, Chair—

             guides you into proper alignment

while giving you feedback and control.

            Because movements are

             low-impact

, Pilates is gentle on the joints while still building strength and stability.

This is why Pilates is often used in rehabilitation and why so many doctors and physical therapists recommend it. It’s a method that strengthens while supporting you—whether you’re brand new to exercise, returning after an injury, or already active and looking to add something new.

I remember my very first equipment class. I was pregnant with my first child, running my yoga studio in Denver, and struggling with chronic sciatica pain. A fellow studio owner suggested I try a Pilates Chair class. It was humbling—I could barely control the springs, my balance was all over the place, and I shook like a leaf the entire time. But then something unexpected happened: my pain eased. For the first time in weeks, I felt relief. So I kept going back. And step by step, what once felt intimidating became the thing that supported me most.

           2. What You’ll Notice as Classes Add Up

As your class count grows, you’ll start noticing real changes:

             Posture improves

—you’ll feel taller, lighter, and more open.

             Core control increases,

giving you stability in everyday movements.

             Mobility and flexibility expand,

            without strain or forcing.

             Balance sharpens

, making daily life safer and easier.

Many students also notice less back pain, better breathing, and a stronger mind-body connection.

In short: you’ll begin to feel more capable in your own body. What felt foreign at first will start to feel natural.

Pilates and Timelessness: Why True Practice Never Goes Out of Style

I love being in the mountains. I am, without a doubt, a child of the earth—most at home on a trail flanked by enormous boulders, each one inviting you to pause and bask in the sun. The trees have stood for centuries, their younger kin just beginning to take root. Wildflowers scatter across the forest floor, and the breeze always seems to arrive at the perfect moment. Above it all, the deep blue sky and bright white clouds remind me: nature is timeless.

And I think about that a lot when I’m in my Pilates studio here in Naperville.

What Does “Timeless” Mean in Movement?

The mountains have existed long before I arrived, and they will continue long after I’m gone. The same is true for certain ideas, practices, and systems. Pilates—especially the method Joseph Pilates created in the early 20th century—is one of them.

As I study the body and its mechanics, I’m struck by how closely Joe’s original work aligns with modern research. His understanding of breath, control, and functional movement was ahead of his time. In a sense, he could “see through time.”

Pilates in Naperville: Honoring the Method

At The School of Pilates in Naperville, we work to preserve that timeless quality.

That doesn’t mean every classical exercise is ready for every body, every day. It means we adapt with purpose—breaking down the repertoire to meet you where you are, then building you toward greater strength, control, and capability.

Our Fundamentals classes are where it begins, helping new and returning students alike establish the foundations Joe intended: precise movement, deep core engagement, and breath-driven flow. From there, our Develop and Advanced Study classes deepen the challenge while staying true to the system’s roots.

Avoiding Trends, Building Strength for Life

Fitness fads come and go—quick fixes, flashy equipment, “new” methods that fade as quickly as they appear. But when you invest in something that is already proven to last, you’re investing in a stronger, more capable future self.

          Trends fade. Fads vanish.

Pilates, practiced with respect for its principles, will never be out of style.
